Rosé wine top picks: 5 favourite rosé wines you need to try this summer!

Author: Jane Nisbet Huseby, owner and Head Educator, Oslo Wine School

Rosé wines have long been associated with summer, and especially light-bodied pale pink Provence rosé that is deliciously fresh whether you are having lunch by the pool-side or a summer barbeque, however, there are so many other rosé wine styles just waiting to be discovered!  Here are my 5 top picks to enjoy this summer with or without food.

1. Fresh & Fruity: Cono Sur Bicicleta Sauvignon Blanc Blush, Chile  Price: 119,90 kr.

Easy-drinking style with vibrant acidity and just a touch of sweetness. Based on fruity gooseberry and lime driven Sauvignon Blanc with just a hint of red berries from Pinot Noir, this is an easy to enjoy rosé, perfect for relaxed evenings enjoying the last rays of sunshine.

2. Fruity & Floral: Amalaya Rosado, Salta, Argentina. Price: 159,90 kr.

Produced from high-altitude vines planted between 1,650 and 1,800 metres above sea-level in the north of Argentina in the heart of the Calchqui Valley in Salta.  A pretty little rosé wine made from 95% Malbec producing an abundance of delicate strawberries and red cherries, whilst hints of white flowers emerge from the small amount of Torrontes used in the blend.  Pure, bright and dry, this is the perfect easy-drinking rosé to enjoy well-chilled with summer salads.

3. Soft Bubbles: Meinklang Prosa 2024, Austria. Price: 199,90 kr.

One of my favourite sparkling rosé wines from one of Austria´s leading biodynamic producers. With a holistic view on viticulture and minimal intervention winemaking, Meinklang makes very interesting wines, and their rosé wines are always delightful! Lightly sparkling and made from 85% Pinot Noir and 5% Zweigelt, this pretty and softly sparkling rose offers refreshing acidity, wild strawberries, hints of spice and wild herbs and gentle bubbles, and is perfect served chilled and enjoyed with friends and home-made pizza. I love it when I find this at our local sea-front restaurant after a day out on the fjord.

4. Modern Rioja: Muga Rosé 2024, Rioja, Spain. Price: 214,90 kr.

Muga is known for being one of the most traditional bodegas in Rioja, located in the heart of old Haro railway station. Still family-owned, this winery offers a fabulous range of wines and never disappoints.  Made from 70% Garnacha and 30% Viura, this elegant modern vibrant rosé wine offers hints of ripe strawberries, water melon, and citrus fruits. A structured rosé with considerable complexity, indicating this wine may happily cellar for a couple of years or more. This is a more serious rosé, which you can enjoy either as an aperitif with friends or experiment with grilled prawns with lemon and olive oil or baked prawns in garlic, parsley and chilli. Serve lightly chilled.

5. Going Greek! Thymiopoulos Rosé de Xinomvavro 2023, Macedonia, Greece. Price: 224,90 kr.

A favourite treat especially with food! Apostolos Thymiopoulos is a talented winemaker from the Noussa region and is my go-to producer of Xinomavro wines.  Xinomavro is Greece´s answer to Nebbiolo from Piemonte, and wines made from Xinomavro are usually very structured and age-worthy. This lovely acid-driven rosé offers hints of red fruit, dried tomatoes and spices with a fine acidic backbone, perfect for light BBQ meats, or home-made pizza. Serve lightly chilled.
