This autumn we will offer two options to participate in our WSET Level 3 in Wine. Student can choose either to participate in our very successful digital version where students have both theory and tastings session live on Zoom, or alternatively new this autumn we will offer a combination of online theory sessions and course centre (classroom) tastings session.

About the L3 in Wine combined digital theory course and classroom tasting tutorials course
What you will learn:
- How to accurately describe the key characteristics of wines and use this description to make and assessment of quality and readiness to drink using the WSET Level 3 Systematic Approach to Tasting (SAT)
- How to make appropriate wine recommendations
- The principal natural and human factors in the vineyard and winery that influence the production of still wines of the world.
- How natural and human factors in the vineyard and winery influence style, quality and wine prices
- Identify the key characteristics of still wines produced in the principal wine producing regions of the wines.
- How key natural and human factors in addition to local laws and commerce influence the style and quality of wines
- Key factors in the production of wine: location, grape growing (viticulture), winemaking, maturation and bottling.
- Identify the key characteristics of the principal sparkling and fortified wines of the world and how natural and human factors, as well as wine laws, influence the style, quality and price of these wines.
How you will learn on the combined digital theory evening and classroom tasting course:
- 11 live digital theory sessions on Zoom 2 hours each session
- 2 days of classroom tutored tasting of more than 40 wines – held in Oslo.

- Small classroom size to ensure sufficient learning and one-to-one interaction

About the combined digital evening course and classroom tasting tutorials:
Students participate in 11 live wine theory sessions (2 hours) each week. Actual tasting tutorials will take place over 2 full days in Oslo – Saturday 23 October and Saturday 20 November from 09:00 – 16:00 hrs. Classroom location to be confirmed. If there are sufficient students interested, we will also hold classroom tastings in Bergen.

Note: All digital sessions are recorded. In the event that you are not always able to attend the live sessions, it is possible to view the recorded version. However this course requires dedication and our live sessions are interactive requiring students to embrace actively participation in our discussions and with their fellow students.

2. Classroom tasting tutorials: Saturdays 09:00 – 16:00 hrs in Oslo (location to be confirmed)
Exam date: Monday 06 December in Oslo. Time and location to be confirmed.
The WSET L3 in Wine classroom exam consisting of a theory exam (multiple choice and four short paragraph answers) and tasting exam (2 wines blind). The day before the exam student will be invited to a half-day tasting practice session in Oslo (optional).
In addition to the live classroom tutorial sessions on Zoom, students are expected to dedicated approx.60 hours of self-study. All required knowledge can be found in the accompanying Level 3 in Wine course book “Understanding wines: explaining style and quality”. Students will also be guided in their studies through a dedicated forum on Teams, homework assignments and tests developed on Kahoot!, and students are actively encourage to develop their own study group within the classroom.

These sessions will run over 10 evenings and include the following topics:
- Course induction and tasting technique. Natural factors and human influences in the vineyard
- Human influences in the winery
- White wines of Germany, Alsace, Austria and Tokaj
- White wines of Burgundy, Loire and Bordeaux
- Red and rosé wines of Bordeaux, South West France and the Loire Valley
- Red wines of Burgundy, Beaujolais, and the red and white wines of the northern Rhône Valley
- Red, white and rosé wines of southern Rhône and southern France. Red wines of Spain Part 1 and white wines of Spain and Portugal
- Red wines of Northern Spain and red and white wines of Northern Italy
- Red and white wines of central and southern Italy, red wines of Portugal and red and white wines of Greece. Feedback tasting of 2 wines
- Premium red wines of New Zealand, USA and Australia
- Premium white wines of New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, USA and Canada
- Regional specialities of Australia, South Africa and USA. Premium red and white wines of Argentina and Chile
- Sparkling Wines & Fortified Wines
WSET Level 3 in Wine Exam:
The exam comprises of two papers; a Theory Paper and a Tasting Paper. In order to pass, you have to attain a mark of 55% or above in both papers. The Theory paper consists of a 50 questions multiple choice paper and four short written questions which have to be completed in two hours. The Tasting Paper consists of a blind tasting of two wines which must be completed in 30 minutes.
Pass with Distinction: 85% and above
Pass with Merit: between 70 – 84%
Pass: between 55 – 69%
Fail: between 45 – 54%
Fail Unclassified: 44% or below
Exam papers are sent to WSET in London for marking and results are received usually within 10 – 12 weeks. Students will be informed by email as soon as we receive the results. Successful students will then receive their certificate and lapel pin by mail.
If you are unsuccessful in either exam, you will have the possibility to retake the exam without retaking the whole course. In addition, if you received over 55% in one paper, you will only have to re-take the other paper you were unsuccessful with.
