Gaja, is without doubt one of Piemonte´s top wine producers.  Angelo Gaja become revolutionary in his quest for quality Nebbiolo and known for his experimental techniques and approaches for gaining the most out of his vineyard sites and the sometimes unconventional approach to which grapes should be planted there.  His uncompromising commitment to quality famously in 1984 meant he sold off 12,000 cases of Barbaresco wine as bulk (to the horror of his family) because he felt it didnt meet his quality standards.

Today, Angelo´s oldest daughter Gaia Gaja is the primary figurehead of the winery, running the business with her sister Rossana and brother Giovanni

100% Nebbiolo. 14% abv

Pale ruby/brick red colour. Nose: restrained and lightly perfumed with rose petals, rosehip, red currants, very elegant, savoury and spice. On the palate: very fresh acidity, beautiful structured with firm elegant fine-grained tannins and long finish.  Fruit in background – red cherries, plums, red liquorice. Amazing potential and great linearity.  Still extremely young, with mouth-coating tannins and restrained fruit that is still quite tight and needs time to open up.   

If you open now, allow 3 – 4 hours of decanting time prior to drinking. Alternatively keep a minimum of 10 years during which time it will release some of its tension to reveal more of its currently well-hidden layers of complexity.

Great special present for wine lovers.  I wish I had 10 bottles of this in my cellar.
